Chelsea made a few splashes in the summer transfer window, although not quite as big as they might have hoped, something Antonio Conte has clearly been quite vocal about.
The Blues fans here in the Transfer Tavern were expecting plenty of big names to come through the door at the Bridge, but made do with the likes of Alvaro Morata, Antonio Rudiger, and midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.
One signing who will be under more scrutiny than the others is Bakayoko. His job to replace the outgoing Nemanja Matic is something which will be under the radar this season with many believe Antonio Conte was wrong to sell the midfielder to Man United.
However, our landlord thinks that it could turn out to be a master stroke, and he has plenty of reasons to back this thought up.
The obvious thing which springs to mind is the age difference. Conte has replaced the outgoing Matic, who is 29, with a young and hungry 23-year-old in Bakayoko.
Factor in that Conte has got virtually the same money back for Matic of that he has paid for Bakayoko, and it could make plenty of sense.
The other thing to consider is Chelsea’s high pressing playing style. While Matic played a key role last season, he is limited in terms of his speed and ability to get around the pitch quickly – something which teammate N’Golo Kante excels at.
The athleticism and speed of Bakayoko means the Chelsea midfield runs little risk of being over run this season, while the Frenchman also has a knack of arriving in the box and scoring crucial goals.
Time will tell, but Chelsea could well have pulled off a stunning move by replacing Matic with Bakayoko.
