The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to get slightly concerned at who might succeed Petr Cech in goal at the Emirates…
The ex-Chelsea shot-stopper has been fantastic since moving across London, but given that he is turning 35 next year, the Gunners need to seriously start preparations for life after Cech.
It will take a talented man to step into the shoes of the veteran goalkeeper, and given that the position is notoriously difficult to fill – Arsene Wenger will surely have a task on his hands to land a good enough replacement. But what if the best option for Wenger is already at the club?
Wojciech Szczęsny is currently on loan at AS Roma, having fallen out of favour under Wenger following the arrival of Petr Cech – but is it time for the Frenchman to bring him back?
He was shaky and inconsistent whilst in the Premier League, but there can be no denying that he has improved significantly whilst in Serie A.
Szczęsny has been a near constant for the Italian side so far this season, and his team are doing particularly well. Sitting just behind Juventus in the Italian top flight, Roma are impressing – and much of that is down to their strong back line. They have a fantastic defensive record, and Szczęsny is a big part of that.
At 26-years-old, Szczęsny will be returning to the club as an experienced player, rather than a youngster – whilst his best years still remain ahead of him. Is he as good as Petr Cech? Probably not – but he isn’t far off.
Certainly, there are better options in Europe. Young players like Gianluigi Donnarumma are likely to be coveted over the coming years and months, but Wenger must ensure that his targets are realistic. A player like Donnarumma is likely to cost millions, whilst Szczęsny is a player that is already on Arsenal’s books.
Wenger needs to properly analyse and look at Szczęsny – but he needs to ensure that the correct decision is made. Cech has been a fantastic servant, but his time is coming to an end.
