The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their side will take the Europa League seriously this season…
They look unlikely to make much of an impact in the Premier League, and so the Europa League may offer their only genuine chance at Champions League football ahead of next season.
It makes sense, then, for the club to pick their strongest players every week, and one player that certainly should be in Wenger’s plans is Mesut Ozil, who is rated at £45 million by Transfer Markt. Though he has suffered with injuries lately, the German now looks fit and ready to compete and help the Gunners on their quest for silverware.
Indeed, the fact that he has been injured this season offers a big reason as to why he should be starting. Though the Gunners can’t take the competition lightly, they’ll be expected to beat BATE comfortably, and so the game will offer a great chance for Ozil to get up to pace. Given their poor start to the season, they can’t really afford to risk an unfit player in the Premier League, and so this is the next best thing for the German.
This will also allow some of Arsenal’s other attackers a chance at a night off, with three games a week likely to take its toll as the season progresses.
Let’s not forget, too, that if Arsenal want to win, they’re in with much more of a chance of doing that if Ozil is on the field. Despite his mixed form, on his day there is genuinely nobody better to have in the midfield, and so if he is on his game, BATE will have no chance of beating him.
Offering dynamic attacking, excellent passing and a real goalscoring threat, Ozil can be vital for the Gunners.
It’s a tough call for Wenger, but it makes sense to start him.
