The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to get seriously concerned about the long-term future of Alexis Sanchez…
The Chilean forward has yet to sign a new deal at the Emirates, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season – leaving many in the Transfer Tavern concerned that he could leave in the summer.
Of course, Arsene Wenger may have little choice but to move him on if he fails to agree a new deal – but that is exactly why the Gunners need to ensure that it happens sooner, rather than later.
Alexis Sanchez is, undoubtedly, one of the Premier League’s best players. The Chilean has already scored 15 goals in the Premier League so far this season, and he has been the match winner on more than one occasion. Take the game over the weekend, for example. In a game that Arsenal were expected to win, it was Sanchez that scored the final goal in added time – with the pressure of thousands of Arsenal fans upon his shoulders.
That is exactly what Sanchez is, he is a match winner – and Arsenal simply do not have enough of them.
His impact goes beyond the confines of the pitch, though. His presence within the Arsenal squad immediately brings the significance of the side up – with Sanchez, alongside Mesut Ozil, undoubtedly the most high profile player within the squad. Arsenal are, just about, still one of the Premier League’s best teams – but that is certainly due, in part, to the role that Sanchez has within the squad. They simply don’t have many players even close to his level anymore.
The simple truth for Arsenal is that Alexis Sanchez is undoubtedly their most important player. If the Gunners manage to keep him, that could lead them into a new period of dominance – but if they let him go, that will say a lot about the long-term aspirations of the side.
Whether it be on the pitch or off it, Sanchez’s significance cannot be doubted – and if Wenger fails to secure his long-term future – that could be his long lasting legacy.
