Arsenal have been repeatedly linked as tracking 22-year-old Toulouse defender Aymen Abdennour. The Tunisian defender – who captained his country at U-21 level – is currently plying his trade in Ligue 1 after a short loan spell with Werder Bremen in Germany.
Still a relatively in-experienced player with only 20 Toulouse appearances and only 10 international caps. His tender age means time to improve but by 22 most players who will be top class are already highly rated and this kid is a relative unknown.
Arsenal should be looking for more experienced players, especially in their back four, or at least highly rated youngsters like Mats Hummels for instance. As for Barcelona they plan for the future but again probably have a youngster in their world famous academy who will be better and free.
Clubs seem to be judging players based on their age a lot now a days and most seem obsessed with lowering their teams average age. The media are constantly telling clubs to let players go after a certain age – like whats happening at Chelsea with their ‘old guard’ – and for some reason managers seem to be listening.
We seem to be moving into an era where having a young team is more important than having a good team. Manchester United’s team isn’t that young when you look at their usual starting 11. Aside from De Gea, Welbeck and Jones their players are all 24+ and they are still capable of winning the league should Man City slip up again. Chelsea have reached the FA Cup and Champions League final with an ‘ageing’ squad.
Teams can buy all the young promising talent they like but you can not buy experience and it is a commodity which seems to be severely underestimated at the moment. Arsenal have a young team full of players with potential but they don’t win anything and in truth – even the die hard Arsenal fans would agree – most of the time don’t look capable of winning anything.
I have no doubt Arsenal are a good side with good players but they are severely lacking the experienced players needed to win trophies. Arsenal’s invincible side – who we can all agree was one of the greatest Premier League teams ever – was not full of youngsters. Henry was 26 so just reaching his peak, Lauren was 27, Campbell was 29, Vieira was 27, Bergkamp 35, Pires 30 etc. a team full of experience of players in their prime.
If I were an Arsenal fan I would be pleading with Wenger to sign some good quality experience or players in their peak and increase the teams average age as all fans want their team to win trophies, and at the end of the season and at the end of the players careers trophies are all that matters.
