Why Chelsea need to cut their losses and move on from Diego Costa

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are seriously concerned about Diego Costa’s Chelsea future…

After reports linking Costa with a move to China emerged last week, the forward was subsequently dropped from Chelsea’s clash against Leicester City – and whilst any deal looks unlikely this month – Diego Costa’s Chelsea future certainly hangs in the balance.

Chelsea are reportedly refusing to sell the striker, with Conte looking to hold on to his best players, but unfortunately for the Blues – the time has come to move on from Diego Costa.

Now, certainly, Costa has been vital this season. The 14 goals he has scored for the Blues have been vital for Chelsea’s continued success in the Premier League – but that does not give him a free pass.

By turning his back on Chelsea, Costa has not only undermined Antonio Conte, but he has undermined the club and the fans that have backed him to the hilt since he arrived in England. Always a controversial figure, Chelsea and the Chelsea fans have stood by Costa during difficult periods in England – and his desire to up and leave the club cannot be ignored.

Further to that, Costa’s form last season was poor – and his return to form this season has not just been a coincidence. He looked as though he didn’t care and didn’t want to play for Chelsea last season – and that cannot be forgotten.

Antonio Conte is a manager that values commitment to the team above anything else. Last season, Costa showed the makings of a player that was going to become difficult to man manage – and in truth, the Blues should have seen this coming. It is clear that Costa has no love for the club, and that directly contradicts the methods of Antonio Conte.

Chelsea proved against Leicester City that they don’t need Diego Costa. Chelsea have suffered in recent years with so-called ‘player power’ – and that must change under Conte. No player is bigger than the club, and Diego Costa needs to be the first casualty of a new system behind-the-scenes at Stamford Bridge.
