Why Chelsea’s reported pursuit of Fernando Llorente is a stroke of genius from Conte

Chelsea’s reported pursuit of Swansea City forward Fernando Llorente has been gaining a lot of attention in the Transfer Tavern…

Whilst a decent goalscorer, Fernando Llorente is not a player of the calibre that Chelsea often look towards – but Conte appears determined to land his man.

Certainly a controversial move, many can’t see what Conte is thinking with the deal, but with a Premier League title challenge on the horizon – the Italian’s decision to move for Llorente could very quickly be considered a stroke of genius.

Sure, Llorente is no Diego Costa – but he does offer a very particular set of skills, and these skills could be vital for Antonio Conte going forward. A target-man by trade, Llorente’s role in the side would rarely be as a starter, but rather as a player to come in at the end of the game to either get a winner, or hold the ball up if Chelsea are struggling.

It isn’t like Llorente is a player undeserving of a role at Chelsea, either. The Spaniard has played for some of Europe’s best clubs, including Juventus, and his pedigree speaks for itself. What’s more, the 6 goals that he has scored so far this season have come in a struggling Swansea City side – meaning that his ratio would likely skyrocket when playing with players of Chelsea’s quality.

Sure, he is 31-years-old – but a cheap move or a short-term loan deal could be perfect – giving Chelsea a short-term fix to a problem that has plagued them since the departure of Didier Drogba.

The only significant counter-argument to the deal is the role that Michy Batshuayi will play at Stamford Bridge thereafter. Well, if Sky Sports are to be believed, the Belgian could go the other way on loan. If that is the case – that is the dream situation for the Blues. Batshuayi, who has hardly played, will go away and play a few consecutive games and get used to the Premier League, whilst Chelsea will get a hardened Premier League veteran as they look to seal a famous title win.

When you consider the situation, there is literally no downside for Chelsea. Sure, Batshuayi deserves a chance – but he is never going to play weekly at present, so a loan does make sense.

If Llorente scores a few to take Chelsea to the title – Conte will be heralded a hero – and this move will be considered a masterstroke.
