Clint Dempsey is enjoying a truly wonderful season and has gained admiring glances from clubs across the league, and unsurprisingly has become the subject of transfer rumours with everybody from Norwich to Liverpool being linked with USA international. If Fulham are willing to cash in on the 29 year old here’s three reasons why Liverpool should be the team to come up with the cash.
Goals – The Liverpool midfield has proved itself to be sadly shy of goals this campaign, with nobody managing double figures and only Steven Gerrard having found the net on more than five occasions. In contrast Dempsey boats a goal scoring record superior to Liverpool’s strikers with an impressive 23 goals in 41 appearances.
If Liverpool are to improve on 8th next season additional midfield goals are a must.
Age/experience – Understandably given the rebuilding job required on Merseyside Dalglish and Co have mainly opted to sign young players with an eye on future success, Stewart Downing being the exception to this policy. The problem has been that these signings have failed to produce performances in keeping with the expectations of such a historic club. The booing from the Anfield faithful after some embarrassing home defeats this season demonstrate that Liverpool supporters are losing patience.
Dempsey is a vastly experienced Premiership player with 180 appearances and should have the necessary talent to slot straight into the reds midfield.
All round ability – Several of Liverpool’s midfield this season have been exposed as being one dimensional. Charlie Adam looks unable to carry out his defensive duties due to a lack of pace and Jay Spearing appears in danger of having a nose bleed on the rare occasion he makes it into the opposition box.
Although Dempsey is primarily an attacking midfielder he possess the tenacity required in the Premiership, he is never shy of his defensive duties and is not scared to put his foot in.
