Why Conte needs to make this summer at Chelsea a period of evolution, rather than revolution

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern want to see a few major signings this summer, but our landlord thinks that Antonio Conte must be careful…

Conte has recently discussed the nature of his summer plans, revealing that he is looking to sign a number of players this summer. Whilst a few signings are important this summer, given the increased nature of Chelsea’s fixture proximity, perhaps this summer should be about evolution, rather than evolution.

This is not a case of Chelsea needing to rebuild after a poor season. The Blues are on course to secure a famous Premier League victory at the end of the season, owing to an incredible season under Antonio Conte, and that surely says a lot about how Conte should plan for the summer ahead. Simply put, Chelsea have been the best side in the country this season – and there aren’t many players in England that would improve the Blues’ squad. ¬†Indeed, any players that come in should serve to bulk out the first team, rather than reinvent it.

There isn’t a single area of the Chelsea first team that desperately needs major change, and this is something that Conte must consider.

You also have to consider the options that the Italian will have this summer. Several players will be returning from loan, notably Andreas Christensen and Lewis Baker, and it is time for them to begin making major waves at Stamford Bridge. Add to this the increased role that Nathan Ake, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Nathaniel Chalobah can expect next season – and the Blues’ squad begins to get far more deep.

Certainly, one or two players should come in. A new defender might be important, whilst a striker may also be required. Beyond that, though, Conte’s squad is more than efficient – and he shouldn’t risk signing a new wave of players just to try and get more immediate success.
