Why giving Michael Carrick a new Man Utd deal should be Mourinho’s priority this month

Michael Carrick is a fan favourite in the Transfer Tavern, and it is time for Mourinho to ensure the Red Devils get to enjoy watching the midfielder play for at least another year…

At 35-years-old, many in the Tavern consider you past your prime and ready for retirement – but just like a fine wine, Michael Carrick is seemingly getting better with age.

The¬†always consistent midfielder has found a new lease on life this season, and despite not playing earlier in the campaign, he is now undroppable for Jose Mourinho. It is important then, that Carrick’s long-term future is sorted out – and Mourinho needs to make sure he gets it done as soon as possible.

Earlier in the year, Man Utd were seriously struggling. They couldn’t win, and they were leaking goals for fun – but that has all changed now. Carrick has come into the side, and alongside Ander Herrera has formed a perfectly balanced midfield that even the most hardened of attackers can struggle to break down.

It is no coincidence that Man Utd’s upturn in fortunes has coincided with Carrick’s return to the team.

He’s not just helping himself, either. Michael Carrick’s position in the side has a direct correlation on the rest of his teammates performing. His arrival has allowed Paul Pogba to play further up the field, and he has since turned into quite the impressive attacker – whilst the defensive duo of Rojo and Jones have had their flaws hidden under the cover of Carrick – with the veteran midfielder able to pick up all the pieces that would otherwise be dropped in the defence.

It’s not just on the field either. At 35-years-old, Carrick has won everything with Man Utd – and his experience in the dressing room is absolutely vital. From training ground, to dressing room to pitchside – Michael Carrick is arguably the most important player in the Man Utd squad.

Mourinho has often been so good at recognising talent, but with Michael Carrick – he clearly hasn’t seen it yet. If he wants to achieve success long-term – then Carrick needs a long-term deal.
