Why it’s worth Man City paying over the odds to land this £6.3m-rated stalwart

The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern don’t know what to think of reports linking the Citizens with a move for Jonny Evans…

For a club that is often linked with some of Europe’s most recognisable names, it’s certainly a change of pace to target the Premier League defender – but is it a worthwhile one? Our landlord thinks so.

Despite his lack of star power, Evans is not a name that you should look past. The 29-year-old is a 3-time Premier League winner, which is a testament to how impressive he was at times during his spell at Man Utd. By signing him, you aren’t signing an unproven, overrated defender – you are signing a proven winner. He hasn’t been at that level for a few years, but if anything, he has gotten better since his last title win.

At West Brom, he has become the main defender, and he has really flourished as a result. Currently club captain, he is a real leader and a consistent face at the back of the defence, and so Pep Guardiola would really be able to rely on the Northern Irishman.

At 29-years-old, he’s no spring chicken, of course, but what he does have are years of experience. Winning titles is one thing, but something can be said for consistently playing football in the Premier League – and Evans has more experience of doing that than most.

Not every signing can be a glamorous one. What is clear is that Man City need defensive bodies, and Evans would be a great option. He’ll only be available for beyond the £6.3 million TransferMarkt rate him at, but he’ll be worth every penny.
