The idea of Philippe Coutinho leaving Liverpool this summer is not a very popular sentiment in the Transfer Tavern, but perhaps Jurgen Klopp should consider letting the Brazilian leave…
Nobody is doubting the quality of Coutinho, nor should they. This season, as he has every year since moving to Liverpool, the Brazilian has been a vital player for the Reds. Offering dynamic playmaking from the heart of the midfield, alongside a consistent goal threat, the Brazilian rarely has a bad game and is almost always involved whenever Liverpool play well. That is not up for debate.
However, despite his usefulness for Klopp, there are some benefits to letting the midfielder leave. The most obvious and most poignant of these is the money involved. Liverpool have reportedly quoted any potential buyers around €90 million for Coutinho – a sum of money that would put him amongst some of Europe’s most expensive players. Not to say that Coutinho isn’t worth that sort of money, but Klopp could reinvest those funds into something far greater. Indeed, with defensive issues plaguing the Reds at present, the German could look to sign two or three players for that role – and they would aid the club far better than Coutinho on his own.
You also have to consider Jurgen Klopp’s style of play. A high-press, energetic method – Coutinho has done well in adapting to the system, but there is no doubting that he would be better suited to a more pass-oriented style, as he would feature in were he to move to Barcelona. Adam Lallana has excelled in the system because he is suited to it, and perhaps Klopp could look to reinvest the funds made from Coutinho’s sale to sign someone more natural. Again, this is not to take away from Coutinho – he has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season – but the midfielder isn’t completely invulnerable.
The Liverpool of 2017 are a very different club to the Liverpool of 2015. Under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds aren’t reliant on Coutinho as they used to be. With the emergence of players like Adam Lallana, Klopp has built a side that is able to compete regardless of injury, form or departure, and he will no doubt be able to move on from the sale of Coutinho were it to happen.
Should he be sold? Probably not, but if a big offer comes in – Klopp must consider it.
