Why Newcastle must start this £9.9m-rated man against Liverpool

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern were hoping for a very solid start to the Premier League season…

In reality, it’s been a very up and down campaign, with moments of sheer elation marred by spells of disappointment. Their record of three wins is impressive, but the three losses they’ve picked up along the way – not so much.

Still, we’re in the early stages of the Premier League, and a win this weekend against Liverpool could fire them further up the table once more. In order to get that win, though, Rafa Benitez needs to pick a strong side, and our landlord reckons that Jonjo Shelvey – who is rated at £9.9 million by Transfer Markt – needs to start.

One major criticism that fans have of the Englishman is his aggression, and that is certainly a drawback of his playstyle. However, that aggression is sometimes just what you need to get over the line. A team without fight is no team at all, and Shelvey has that fight in droves. He refuses to give up, and yes, that sometimes means he gets carried away, but oftentimes that risk is worth having in the side, if it means that your midfield is controlled by someone as passionate as Shelvey.

You also have to look back at his form last season. Sure, he hasn’t been great yet this term, but he was a crucial cog in Benitez’s midfield machine last season, and he can do the same job this season. The whole team ran through him, and everyone knows just how good Newcastle were for much of last term. With 5 goals and 8 assists throughout the campaign, if he can have anywhere near that level of impact this season, Newcastle will be in a good place.

Liverpool will be a very tough opponent to face, but if Shelvey is on form, they could snag a famous win.
