Why Olivier Giroud’s proposed new contract could be Arsenal’s deal signing of the month

With news, stemming from Telefoot (via Sky Sports), suggesting that Olivier Giroud is set to sign a new deal with Arsenal – the Gunners in the Transfer Tavern are split in their view of the divisive frontman…

Cast your mind back to the 3rd of January, and Arsenal’s remarkable comeback against Bournemouth. After going 3-0 down, it was Giroud that scored the vital equalising goal – sparing the Gunners’ blushes in the process. However, after the game, nobody was interested in the result – they were too focused upon Giroud’s lengthy celebration, of which he prioritised over a quick restart in an effort to win the game.

The focus placed upon Giroud was, in many ways, a microcosm of how the Frenchman is often viewed by football fans in general. Here he was, Arsenal’s goal hero – and instead of being praised – he was vilified for celebrating his goal.

Giroud has always been a player that divides option, whether it be because of his reportedly one-dimensional play style, or off-the-field persona – and so the Frenchman rarely gets the credit he deserves. ¬†Scorer of 63 Premier League goals for the Gunners in less than 5 seasons, Giroud has one of England’s most impressive goals-to-games ratio, yet he is never placed in the same league as players like Diego Costa, or even Daniel Sturridge.

Giroud is much more than just a goalscorer, though. Over the last few years, he has transformed into the perfect forward. He can hold the ball up, he can pass-and-move, and he has a few tricks up his sleeve too. Sure, he isn’t the most flamboyant or exciting footballer, but he gets the job done – and that is far more than can be said for a lot of the other strikers in the Premier League.

A few of the Arsenal fans in the Tavern have criticised his proposed new deal by bringing his age into the equation. Many even argue that Giroud is past it – but the stats just don’t add up. The Frenchman has already scored 6 in the Premier League this season, despite playing just 13 times. When you consider that last year, Giroud scored just 16 in 38 – if anything, his record is improving.

The jury is, and forever will be out on Olivier Giroud, but it is time for both Arsenal and football fans in general to recognise the player that he is. He is, undoubtedly, one of the Premier League’s best forwards – and his new contract, if it happens, should be celebrated by Arsenal fans around the world.
