Why selling Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid might not actually be such a bad idea

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t very happy about reports in the Sun linking goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a move to Real Madrid…

After all, the talented Belgian has been vital for the Blues this season, and has quickly redeemed himself for a few poor performances in the 2015/16 campaign. Surely, Chelsea should look to hang on to Courtois for at least a few more years?

Well, in reality, it could actually make more sense for Chelsea to cash in on the Belgian.

On an immediate level, you’ve got to think of the money involved. Thibaut Courtois is one of the most highly-regarded players in Europe – and so he would command a significant transfer fee as a result. How much is unclear, but you would assume it could be north of £50 million – which would represent huge value for money for Chelsea, considering that he was signed for less than £10 million.

You also have to look towards comments that he has recently made in the media. Thibaut Courtois clearly preferred life in Spain, and it seems as though he has his heart set on the move – and it would not make sense to keep him against his well.

Now, Courtois is certainly a good goalkeeper, but is he objectively one of Europe’s best? Petr Cech spoiled Chelsea with his consistent performances and near-weekly match winning saves – and Courtois certainly hasn’t even been comparable to the Chelsea legend. He has pulled off a few good saves and impressed this season, but you certainly can’t describe him as the match winner that Cech so often was.

If Chelsea can get a decent fee for Courtois, a departure, in reality, makes a lot of sense. Asmir Begovic is more than adequate replacement, at least in the short term, with Courtois clearly unlikely to spend years at Chelsea – like Petr Cech did.
