The Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern are pretty disappointed about their side’s proposed sale of Patrick van Aanholt…
According to the Guardian, Crystal Palace are closing in on a deal to sign van Aanholt – a report that has left the Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern feeling absolutely distraught.
After all, based on current form, the Dutch defender has arguably been one of the most impressive players within the Sunderland squad. He offers a real threat going forward, and whilst there have been some question marks over him at the back – even the defensive side of his game has improved this season.
Since being moved on by Chelsea, van Aanholt has developed into an impressive defender – and with Sunderland’s current league position looking precarious, it could spell the end for the David Moyes-led side.
To be fair, nobody at Sunderland has exactly covered themselves in glory this season – and van Aanholt is no exception. What you can always guarantee from him, though, is hard work and determination – and that will have been vital for the Black Cats ahead of a relegation battle. On top of that, he has scored 3 goals this year – and given that goals have been increasingly difficult to come by this season for the club, that could be a huge loss.
At 26-years-old, Van Aanholt is a player for the past, present and future of Sunderland – and with an extensive rebuilding process on the horizon, regardless of where they finish at the end of the season – van Aanholt really needs to be a part of that.
On the flip side, £12 million is a lot of money – but with just a few days until the end of the window, will Sunderland really have enough time to get a few deals done? What’s more, will anyone actually want to come to a side that are, undoubtedly, on the way down? Our landlord doesn’t think so…
David Moyes may have held on to Jermain Defoe – but the proposed departure of Van Aanholt could be Sunderland’s worst deal of the month.
