Why Sunderland simply must hold on to Jordan Pickford

The Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern have been impressed with Jordan Pickford’s start to life in the Sunderland first team…

Whilst he started the season as back-up to Vito Mannone, Pickford quickly asserted himself under David Moyes as the first choice goalkeeper, and whilst injury has put that to one side at present – it is vital that the Black Cats ensure that Pickford remains a key part of the first team for years to come.

Many of the Sunderland fans in the Transfer Tavern are resigned to relegation this season, and with it looking increasingly likely – the Black Cats must prepare. David Moyes is the first piece of the puzzle that needs to be secured, but Jordan Pickford must surely be second in line.

The next few years are going to be part of a rebuilding process at the Stadium of Light, and what better way to ensure that process than to have a homegrown talent at the crux of proceedings in the first team. Pickford has grown up playing for Sunderland, and if the Black Cats are relegated – they need to get back to basics.

He stands at the back of the Sunderland first team, and he is one of the most vital members in the side – making it all the more vital that he stays.  At 20-years-old, he could very well be a important part of proceedings at the Stadium of Light for years to come.

Pickford has grown up with Sunderland, and so he understands the club as well as anybody. In the same way that Chelsea defender John Terry has been with the Blues from the start – the very same can be said of Pickford.

In essence, David Moyes could build his team around Pickford – and whilst many will depart should relegation come – Pickford must remain. Arsenal have been linked in recent months, but David Moyes must resist the temptation to cash in.
