Why this £40m Man Utd move actually makes a lot of sense for the club

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern have spent all day discussing Man Utd’s reported interest in Eric Dier…

According to the Mirror, a reported £40 million move could be on the table this summer for the midfielder, and whilst the Tottenham fans in the pub are definitely against it – it could actually be a great move for Man Utd.

Firstly, you have to consider what Man Utd will be needing this summer. Upgrades are needed throughout the team, and a new central midfielder is almost definitely on Jose Mourinho’s wishlist. Michael Carrick has been a regular and vital member of the first team this year, but his time at Old Trafford is drawing to a close – with his age beginning to catch up to him. The role that he plays, though, is vital. He serves as the anchor between midfield and defence, and much like N’Golo Kante at Chelsea, his position allows all of the players around him to play more offensively.

This is where Eric Dier could come in. The Englishman has been in fine form this year, and whilst he has regularly played in defence this season, he made his name as a midfield anchorman – and he could take over the mantle from Michael Carrick perfectly. Comfortable on the ball, able to play a good pass and an excellent tackler – Dier is, in many ways, a carbon copy of Carrick in his pomp.

You also have to consider Dier’s homegrown status. Man Utd are short on homegrown players, given the money that they have spent on world class foreign stars in recent years, and Dier would certainly help to add to their homegrown contingent. At 23-years-old, he would also be a long-term solution – making the £40 million investment seem like very good value.

Will this deal come to be? It will certainly be hard, but for Man Utd, it will be worth the effort.
