The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about the impending departure of John Terry this summer…
The Englishman has, of course, been the one constant at Stamford Bridge over the last decade, and so the fact that he is about to leave certainly gives the Blues cause for concern.
Of course, the immediate reaction to news of a departing hero is to figure out how to replace him, and whilst the Blues could look elsewhere in the search for a solution, perhaps Antonio Conte already has a homegrown solution within the squad.
£6.8m-rated defender Nathan Ake has impressed since returning from a loan at Bournemouth, though he has rarely been given a starting berth by Antonio Conte. Recalled in January, the Dutchman has served as an extra line of depth for the Blues – and next season it might be time for him to step out of the shadows.
After all, he has already proven that he is more than capable of performing at the highest level. Both for Bournemouth and Chelsea he has been a star, easily slotting in at centre-half or left-back. He hasn’t looked out of place in a Blue shirt, and that is particularly impressive given how little experience he has compared to some of his teammates.
He also draws parallels with John Terry in that he has come through the Chelsea youth system. Sure, he didn’t join the club as an 8-year-old fan, but he has spent much of his career in London with the Blues – and that will certainly count for something.
Sure, he isn’t the finished article yet, but he certainly isn’t far off.
