Kyle Walker reportedly wants out of Tottenham, and the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are licking their lips as a result…
It would certainly be a strange move for Walker to move across London, but for a plethora of reasons, it might just be the best plan of action for the Englishman.
Let’s look at it from Chelsea’s perspective. Victor Moses, a natural winger, has been a standout player so far this season – but will Conte persist with him for more than a year? The quality of the sides that Chelsea will face is only going to increase next season, both domestically and now in the Champions League, and as a result, the Nigerian could become exposed. Certainly, he will still be utilised – but as a defender? Perhaps not so much.
Step in Kyle Walker. A natural defender, the Englishman would be far more assured in the role, and would fit Conte’s system absolutely perfectly. A slightly more offensive player than is typical for that position, he would be perfectly suited to playing as a wing-back, with his electric pace likely to combine fantastically with the likes of Pedro and Eden Hazard ahead of him.
He is solid defensively too. Albeit a secondary aspect of his game, the defensive side of his play has improved dramatically this season – and Conte would have no problems relying on him in this position.
His experience at the highest level is clear, too, and his homegrown status would also be an added bonus for the Blues.
If Walker is available, it seems obvious that Chelsea should move for the defender.
