The Transfer Tavern has been aloft with speculation all week long, with reports linking James Rodriguez with a €75 million move to the club…
Undoubtedly one of Europe’s most impressive players, Rodriguez would certainly be a very high-profile signing were he to move to the Premier League – but our landlord thinks that he would make waves on the field too, especially for Man Utd.
Though James Rodriguez hasn’t been utilised well by Real Madrid so far this season, there is no doubting his quality. Best deployed as a number 10, the Columbian is unstoppable with the ball at his feet. He is often able to find a pass out of nowhere, and that is a trait that simply cannot be undervalued. His dribbling is also very impressive, able to move past defenders as if they aren’t there.
He rose to prominence in 2014 at the World Cup, and he became known for his impressive free-kicks. He certainly hasn’t lost that ability, and he would undoubtedly give Man Utd another string to their bow in that sense.
The midfielder is also fairly unique in that he offers what nobody else in the Man Utd first team can. He brings together so many of the positive traits of his potential future teammates. He can pass like Juan Mata, dribble like Anthony Martial and score like Henrikh Mkhitaryan. In many ways, he is a hybrid of everything that Jose Mourinho wants from a midfielder.
What’s more, though he is famed for his attacking play, he is also a hard worker – a trait that Mourinho will love.
You also have to consider his name. If Man Utd lose Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, they will be losing a lot of star power. Rodriguez would be able to replace that, and he would be a very marketable name for the Red Devils.
This deal makes sense on so many levels.
