The West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern want big changes at the London Stadium this summer, and a recent report from the Daily Star could provide just what they need…
According to the Daily Star, West Ham have joined the race for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, and whilst the move might sound like a strange one, it could actually be best for all parties.
Sure, Everton and West Ham are on a relatively similar level in terms of the stature of their clubs, and a move to the London Stadium might not be much of a step up for Barkley – but that could be just what he needs. Tottenham are reportedly in the chase for him, and whilst a move to White Hart Lane might be good for his wallet, it might prove to be a poor move for his career. At West Ham, he would become the focal point of the attack, and that is not something that he should turn his nose up at.
From West Ham’s perspective, the deal makes a lot of sense too, with Barkley clearly one of England’s most talented youngsters. Able to find a pass through the eye of a needle and able to dribble past defenders like they aren’t there, his skill on the ball is fantastic, and West Ham don’t really have anyone like him anymore. There is clearly a Dimitri Payet-shaped hole in the West Ham midfield, and Barkley could fill that.
You also have to consider West Ham current contextual situation. They are a club that needs to sell season tickets and improve their league standing. What better way to do that than by signing one of England’s most recognisable young players?
