The Brazilian international, Willian, has been a long-term target for Chelsea and has declared his frustration towards his club, Shakhtar Donetsk, for rejecting a deal which would see him move to Stamford Bridge.
Although, the Daily Mail has reported that London rivals Tottenham Hotspur might be willing to put in a bid for the 23 year old.
This could be the second time this window that the two clubs have collided over a possible player with Chelsea rumoured to have succeeded in luring fellow Brazilian, Oscar, to the home of the European Champions.
But, with a £19 million fee being required to purchase the attacking midfielder, it would be a waste for Tottenham to pursue this target. With Van Der Vaart and Sigurdsson already playing in the attacking midfield position, the club need to purchase a replacement for the likely department of Luka Modric as well as buying 2 strikers to add to their lonely target-man of Jermain Defoe.
Whilst it could be argued that Willian could fulfill the position which Luka will leave behind, Spurs must instead aim to look for a replacement who has proven himself in the top leagues of Europe, and for me I don’t count the Ukrainian league as one of the most impressive divisions.
Even though he has performed on the European scale in the Champions League, he hasn’t impressed the continent. Scoring 3 goals in 16 appearances wouldn’t be bad normally. However, with the likes of Apoel and Zenit being in the same group as Donetsk, it is fair to say this record isn’t worth a Premier League move.
But, Willian is very excited about a possible move to Chelsea and told ESPN the following:
“They [Chelsea] have a culture of winning trophies and that excites me.”
With this quote, it is obvious to see Willian’s excitement to join the FA Cup winners, but with an overstocked attacking midfield for Chelsea, and more important positions to fill at Spurs, it would be foolish for either club to purchase this unproven talent.Like what the TT have on offer?
