The Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern have become concerned by the potential departure of Wilfried Zaha in recent weeks, but recent reports suggest he will remain at the club this summer.
If reports are to be believed, Zaha has become a target for every one of the top-six clubs in recent months due to his glowing performances in the Premier League. The Ivorian international has been Palace’s most devastating and consistently effective attacking outlet both as a winger and as a centre-forward, so it’s no surprise that England’s heavyweights are beginning to flex their financial muscles in preparation for a summer bid.
However, the player himself appears to have quashed the speculation regarding his future by claiming that “there’s no reason” why he should depart Selhurst Park this summer. The natural lure of Champions League football and an increase in salary might well alter his thinking as the summer window develops, but it’s clear that Palace have a fantastic opportunity to keep him this summer.
With that in mind, it’s important that Palace react to Zaha’s revelation by proving their ambition with a handful of new acquisitions, otherwise his stance will be vastly different by the end of the summer transfer window. After a season of teetering above the relegation zone it almost goes without saying that reinforcements are needed, but the Palace hierarchy must show a level of ambition which proves to Zaha that they want to achieve much more than just mere survival next season.
An ideal place to begin would be securing the signature of Ruben Lotfus-Cheek on a permanent deal, as the quality of his form this season suggests he will blossom into an excellent Premier League standard player in the years to come. Considering how well Loftus-Cheek has performed this season, interest is likely to be forming elsewhere, but they must fend off their rival bidders and bring him to the club in the coming months.
Palace may have Zaha on their ranks for now, but that will not last long if they fail to bring an array of talent to the club this summer. The presence of Zaha could prove to be the difference between a relegation scrap and an ambitious push for Europa League football next season, so the club’s hierarchy must react to his recent comments by beginning to open negotiations with a handful of quality players in the weeks to come.
