With rumours of some big names leaving Barca in the summer – Dani Alves and Pep Guardiola among others – it seems the biggest shock of all, could be about to happen. No not Man City remembering who they actually are and realising they can’t throw their financial weight around, but Andres Iniesta could be on his way out of the Nou Camp.
The man who has come to represent Barcelona in this millennium, may test his boyhood club’s resolve with a bid from Manchester City of £85 million. Two questions: will he go? And is that enough??
Iniesta is a class act. He and Xavi have won everything together in the middle of Barcelona and Spain’s midfield. He creates, scores very important goals, works hard and loves the game but would he fancy a change? If Pep Guardiola leaves Barca, would he want to play for Roberto Mancini (or whoever is in charge of City)?
And what can City offer (apart from money of course)? Can they offer a genuine chance of silverware? In fairness, they look set for a Champions League spot this season and are still in the hunt for the Premiership title at the moment, but is the dressing room at Eastlands just too divided and unsettled compared to Iniesta’s home at the Nou Camp?
And is £85M enough? This is a player who delivers more consistently than Lionel Messi and is a Barca man through and through, loved by the fans. But is he loved by the board? Will they try to squeeze more out of City or could Barca sell and produce another Iniesta – a home grown, world-class performer?
