The Republic of Ireland international is likely to leave Eastlands either on loan or on a permanent basis in the New Year, following losing his place in the Man City first team to Joe Hart, who has been in excellent form since the start of the season.
Given has played once for City this season in their Carling Cup defeat at West Brom and Roberto Mancini has promised to allow Given to leave should his frustration of not getting first team football prompt him to request to leave.
The United boss is looking to address the need of a long term replacement for Edwin Van der Sar, though it will be a tough challenge trying to persuade his bitter neighbours to part with Given.
Man City were reluctant to deal with close competitors in the Premiership during the summer transfer window and it is unlikely that this policy will have changed.
