Well according to Goal.com UK Roberto Mancini is lining up 2 potential defensive marquee signings this Summer, if they fail to land Barcelona ‘defender’ Dani Alves, they will go back to Ajax and renew their interest in Dutch right back Gregory van der Wiel.
Alves who is still embroiled in contract negotiations with Barcelona is thought to be the first choice of the Manchester City boss, his current deal expires in 2012 and should talks breakdown the City hierarchy are ready to swoop for the player who effectively plays as a winger and do a deal for £20million, half the price quoted last Summer. Should the contract issues between player and the Catalan club be ironed out, the Eastlands side will return again for Van der Wiel, another right back who they have been linked too extensively since last Summer.
The 23 year old came through the Ajax youth academy and made his debut for the club in March 2007 at 19 years old. From there he has gone on to be an important part of their set up appearing in 140 games for the club and scoring 9 goals, not a bad record for a full back. He has also become an important part of the national side having been capped more than 20 times.
Mancini is looking for attacking and industrious fullbacks to provide width from deep and that is certainly something that Van der Wiel is capable of. The player was personally recommended to the manager by fan favourite Nigel De Jong before last years World Cup in South Africa and has been linked to many clubs since. Clubs who have supposedly approached Ajax over the player are AC Milan, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and interestingly Barcelona should they lose Dani Alves to Manchester City. It is believed that he could be available for £17million due to a clause in his contract with Ajax.
The move which would see Jerome Boateng be used as a centreback after his City career so far at rightback has been less than perfect could also mean that Mancini is ready to sell England defender Micah Richards who they have supposedly made available for £15milion.
I can see the sense in either transfer, sometimes City do lack width and the idea of having Kolarov getting forward from left back and one of Alves or Van der Wiel bombing on from right back could really stretch opposition defences. My question though is how necessary it might be, in Micah Richards they already have a right back with explosive pace who can cause problems when he comes forward, admitedly the defensive side of his game isn’t perfect but I don’t think that can be said of Van der Wiel or Alves either.
Whatever happens it seems Roberto Mancini is in the market for a new right back, and it is another of those transfer rumours that much like a modern day full back is set to run and run.
