As Aston Villa prepare for the departure of Stuart Downing, new boss Alex McLeish has set his sights on want-away Wigan star Charles N’Zogbia as the man to fill his boots, according to the Daily Mail.
McLeish will have to speed up his interest in bringing the Frenchman to Villa Park, as in the absence of a concrete bid for the winger he looks set to fly out to Sweden with the Latics on Monday for a pre-season trip.
There has been a host of clubs linked with the 25 year old, but with Everton failing to raise the funds, Newcastle and Sunderland refusing to meet the players high wage demands and Liverpool favouring a move for Downing, Villa have taken the front seat and look favourites to drive N’Zogbia out of North West straight to the West Midlands.
The creative wide man has long been a target for the new Villa gaffer, and last season N’Zogbia was on the brink of £9m move to McLeish’s former club, Birmingham that fell through at the last minute due to failing to agree personal terms.
After his controversial move across the City, it looks as if he will finally land his man as the sale of Ashley Young, and the likely exit of Downing will certainly raise the funds to bring in N’Zogbia, and with those two big names of the wage bill, meeting his £60k a week wage shouldn’t be a problem.
What do the Villa fans think, is he the right man to come in?
