With Edwin van der Sar edging ever closer to retirement, Sir Alex is left with the same situation he has found himself in at the end of the Schmeichel and Barthez eras, needing to find the new United keeper, preferably without another Taibi or Bosnich debacle.
However, despite looking at players like David De Gea at Athletico, Rene Adler from Leverkusen and Manuel Neuer of Schalke, Fergie looks like he is about to make a ‘Jim Leighton’-style mistake all over again.
Following United’s Champions League games against Rangers, Allan McGregor has caught Alex’s eye and obviously forgetting the horrors he had after bringing Jim Leighton from his native land in the 80’s, the temperamental 28-year old seems to be top of Fergie’s shopping list.
The possible £7m purchase of the Scottish keeper would certainky be looked upon by most United fans with an air of indifference and would certainly not be the big name signing their fans would be looking for.
My view is that although, at times, McGregor can make great saves, he is in no way consistent enough for United’s liking and he is only protected from that being shown up more because he plays for Rangers and can get away with it most weeks.
There is a reason he isn’t in the Scottish first eleven you know!
So, am I wrong about McGregor and he’s the new Schmeichel or am I right and Fergie is going senile in his old age and has forgotten about his ‘Leighton’ problems?
