Transfer shenanigans stumble towards April as Arsene Wenger pulls out the wallet, dusts down the cobwebs and ponders his next course of action.
Shying away from the intimidating avalanche of Eden Hazard exclusives, one might notice a wind of change sweeping through the thread bare corridors at the Emirates. With the (sort of) capture of Lukas Podolski seemingly pending for the summer, Arsene Wenger appears to be summoning the courage to find interest in another player of high value.
And the good news for Gunners fans is the man in question can defend, and wants to come. Jan Vertongen of Ajax claims in today’s edition of the Sun:
“Arsenal are a magnificent club. I have instructed my agent carefully. He knows which clubs I want to join and Arsenal are one of them. If a club of their calibre can reach agreement with Ajax then I will gladly go over.”
Wenger is known to be keen on the Belgian, and will no doubt be delighted that his side have managed to sneak into such an exclusive list of candidates.
Moving away from the Chinese whispers of the transfer window, national hero Luis Suarez has stated his intent to remain with Liverpool. The Uruguayan was thought to be considering his future in England, after fans unexpectedly turned on him during his unsuccessful battle against a racism charge. But the striker is willing to let bygones be bygones and forgive us all for our sins by staying in England!
There’s a hundred thousand other weekly reasons why the stricken star might be coming round to the idea, and the club are keen to extend a deal which only runs until 2016. Suarez confided to the Montevideo daily El Pais:
“I would like to stay. Despite everything that happened, I’m happy here, on and off the pitch… and at the club they’re happy with me and want me to stay,The coach still believes in me and that’s very important, especially after having been out for eight matches.”
Making that commitment, “despite” everything that’s happened to the stress ridden star, is a very brave and commendable thing to do indeed..
It’s at this point that today’s roundabout of transfer tattle should throw-up another Eden Hazard reference. He’s apparently moving to either Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs or City. He might have even thought about Liverpool at one point, but was probably distracted by something. After narrowing it down to a fifth of the league (and Real Madrid), the Belgian will no doubt make an informed decision based on the stature and prestige of the contract in question.
Now, if your a fan of more underground transfer rumours, you may be interested to find that Chelsea manager Roman Abramovic has taken time out from partying with Andrey Shevchenko to run his beady eye over Havant and Waterlooville’s Ollie Palmer. The Daily Mirror claims a host of clubs are tracking the 20 year old, who’s scored 14 goals since moving to non-league strugglers in the summer.
Finally, delving back into the mainstream of furious speculation, the Metro invites us to indulge ourselves with the tantalising prospect of two European heavyweights battling for the services of Shakhtar Donetsk star Willian. With Chelsea long admirers of the highly rated forward, Serie A leaders AC Milan are emerging from the shadows to challenge their potential Champions League counter parts.
But, as with most pre-window waffle, our hopes in gathering the specifics of this particular deal are crushed by the words of an eager agent:
Right, thanks for that.
