Steven Gerrard has been incredibly active in the transfer market so far this summer in his bid to revamp the Rangers squad, but recent reports suggest that he is struggling to secure the signature of a key club target.

Despite the fact that Gerrard has already added Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson to the squad this summer, it seems that Rangers are eager to bring another centre-back to the club before the window slams shut.

Milwall's Jake Cooper has been subjected to plenty of speculation in recent weeks with regards to a switch to Ibrox, and a recent tweet from Sky Sports journalist Jim White has all but confirmed that Rangers are doing eveyrthing they can to sign him this summer.

According to sources close to Jim White, Rangers have already had 4 bids rejected for Cooper, so it seems incredibly unlikely that they'll be able to force through a deal in the coming weeks with Millwall's stubborn resistance to consider.

Cooper was one of the Lions' standout performers last season at the heart of their defence, but he also offered a significant threat in the penalty area.

The massive 6ft 5in talent used his physical presence to clinical effect by notching 4 goals and providing 3 assists in Millwall's failed bid to reach the play-offs, so it's easy to understand why Rangers are expressing an interest.

However, Millwall's reluctance to entertain offers for his services suggest that Gerrard may have to abandon his pursuit of Cooper in the coming weeks and focus on more realistic alternatives.

With that in mind, here are two players Gerrard should target instead of Cooper this summer...

Curtis Tilt has been tipped for a move to Rangers by the Scottish Sun who believe Gerrard has identified the Blackpool defender as an ideal alternative to Cooper.

Although he is smaller than Cooper, Tilt is a commanding physical presence at the back who would undoubtedly install further solidity into Rangers' back-line.

A natural left-footer by trade, Tilt possesses an eye-catching technical ability for a defender who only recently made the step up to League One from non-league football in June 2017.

He is sometimes guilty of overplaying from the back, but the confidence he has within his own ability should hold him in good stead to succeed at Rangers if he eventually makes the switch.

One of Manchester City's most promising talents slowly began to establish himself at the club last season with a handful of appearances for the first-team.

But with the likes of Vincent Kompany, Aymeric Laporte, Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones standing in way, it's unlikely that he'll be able to become a first-team regular at the club.

As you would expected from a player emerging from City's academy, Adarabioyo is composed in possession of the ball and is brilliant at using his anticipation to make crucial interceptions: he demonstrated this most notably during City's Champions League fixture away at Shakhtar Donetsk last season.

Adarabioyo will need to work hard in the gym to improve his strength in order to deal with the physical nature of the SPFL, but at 20-years-of-age there's no doubt he has huge potential to grow both physically and technically in the years to come.
