Everton have a big problem. Marco Silva’s tenure as boss isn’t going too well at present, with the Toffees not in a good run of form. Truthfully, they’ve got issues up and down the field, but perhaps their most significant issue comes going forward.
They’ve never really been able to replace Romelu Lukaku in the attack, and that’s led to a real shortage of goals at Goodison Park.
If Silva is to have any chance of saving his job, he needs to solve that issue immediately. Significantly, Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has recently admitted to Canal (via Sky Sports) that his future at Stamford Bridge will be darker owing to the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain, with the Frenchman likely to fall down the pecking order again at the club.
Significantly, though, he’s said to be eager to remain in the Premier League – and that could open the door for a club like Everton to make a move. They’re still at a level high enough to satisfy Giroud’s desire, but they’d offer him regular minutes, and that could appeal to him.
At 32-years-old, Giroud is now a veteran of the Premier League, and he’s impressed wherever he’s gone. Offering a perfect balance of goals and link-up play, he’d be a good fit in Silva’s technical team at Goodison Park. He hasn’t scored much at Chelsea this year, but he proved last season that he’s still got the ability to make an impact going forward; he just needs the faith of his team.
Giroud is a great passer and that worked well for him en route to the World Cup final with France, and with players like Richarlison and Bernard in the team at Everton, he’d be able to link up brilliantly.
Everton need a reliable option – and Giroud would be a great choice.
