Man City is not a club that is known for developing young talent, but under Pep Guardiola, that could be changing? Though he’s been offered limited minutes over the last 18 months, Phil Foden has recently emerged as a genuine option for Guardiola at the Etihad.
He’s still not a regular, but he had a starring role for City against Newport County on Saturday, and that bodes well for his future, especially given the fact that players like David Silva are beginning to edge towards the latter stages of their careers.
But Foden isn’t the only star in the City academy. He may be the crown jewel, but there’s an accompanying cast of youngsters on display at the Etihad that Pep Guardiola will also be well aware of.
Indeed, for the first time in a while, the future of Man City could be best viewed by looking first towards the academy at the club, and these TWO players are examples of potential options for Guardiola…
Tosin Adarabioyo is a player that has been around for a long time, yet he’s never really been given a chance in the Man City first team. He was a dominant central defender at youth level, and his frame, agility and leadership all indicated that he’d be a hit in the Man City first team.
However, so far he’s had little opportunity to prove his worth, and that’s a real shame given his obvious talent.
On his side, however, is Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard insisted that he got a Premier League winners medal despite his lack of minutes, and that does imply that the manager rates him highly.
Add to that the fact that he’s been a regular in the Championship with West Brom this term, and you can see his career beginning to turn around.
He’s got a long way to go, and he won’t go and be the next Vincent Kompany next season. However, he’s got enough talent to succeed if he’s given a chance.
Plucked from the Barcelona academy, Eric Garcia is a player with obvious talent. It’s also clear that he’s another player that Pep Guardiola rates, given that he’s already made his debut for the Citizens.
Garcia is very much a modern defender: he’s solid in the tackle and in the air, but he’s also very comfortable passing the ball and moving it forward to create something special. In that sense, he’s the perfect Pep Guardiola player. He’s also very mature and a natural leader, which should increase his chances of getting an opportunity despite his youth.
Man City have a lot of depth, especially at the back, and with Adarabioyo also in the frame, Garcia won’t find it easy. However, his rise over the last couple of years has been great, and it’s obvious that he has a bright future at City.
