The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have grown to love the man they affectionately refer to as ‘Dave’…
A defender with the notoriously difficult to pronounce surname, Cesar Azpilicueta has been in the form of his life as of late. Always a solid defender, under Antonio Conte he has taken his performances to the next level, and so it came as no surprise to learn of interest from Barcelona in the Spaniard.
Thankfully from the Blues’ perspective, Azpilciueta has since come out and denied any personal interest in leaving Stamford Bridge, which is particularly poignant given that Chelsea are set to lose John Terry this summer. In fact, with Terry on the way out, now is the perfect time to realise that Azpilicueta truly is the heir-apparent to the Terry legacy.
Indeed, not since Terry himself was in his pomp have the Stamford Bridge faithful witnessed a defender with so much consistency within the back-line. Never delivering anything below an 8/10 display, Azpilicueta quietly gets on with his business every single week – delivering consistently high-level performances for the Blues. As he has grown into the role and developed, his personality has really come out too, and though not as vocal or immediately visible as Terry – the Spaniard is turning into quite the leader in his own right.
Always giving 100% and constantly displaying ruthless energy and determination, Azpilicueta is the sort of player that you hope every major signing for your club will become – and that undoubtedly rubs off on his teammates.
Thankfully for Chelsea, Azpilicueta wants to stay at the club, but the Blues shouldn’t stop there. Indeed, the interest should give them the kick that they need to ensure that the Spaniard is in it for the long-haul, and after a season in which he played every single Premier League minute, the least he deserves is a new deal.
