With the window now shut, Liverpool must focus all their efforts on securing midfielder agreement

Liverpool supporters have been pretty happy in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side get back to winning ways courtesy of a 3-0 success over struggling Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Terriers having lost each of their preceding two matches to Swansea City and West Brom, the latter ending their participation in this season’s FA Cup. Yet the result was never really in doubt at the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday as goals from Emre Can, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah sealed a routine victory for the Merseyside giants, a result which moved them above Chelsea following their 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth.

Consequently, there have been several upbeat Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom have been discussing their side’s January business in the last few hours following the passing of the deadline on Wednesday.

And one man who remained at the club beyond the 11pm deadline was midfielder Can, who was repeatedly linked with a move to Juventus during the window given the current situation surrounding his contract, what with it due to expire this summer.

And while the 24-year-old could still pen a pre-contract agreement with the Serie A champions after the closing of the window, Liverpool must now focus all their efforts on securing a new deal with the midfielder, as he has been an integral part of Klopp’s team in recent times.

Ultimately, Can didn’t make a great start to life at Anfield under former boss Brendan Rodgers, with the Germany international often played out of position at centre-back, a position he unsurprisingly struggled in.

Yet the 24-year-old has flourished since Klopp’s appointment back in 2015, appearing in 32 of their 38 Premier League games last season in helping the club return to the Champions League, a competition he has since played every game in this term as well.

Clearly, Can is slowly but surely becoming one of the most important players in Klopp’s side in a midfield department somewhat lacking in sufficient depth, so they really cannot afford to let him leave in the summer, let alone on a free.

His performance against Manchester City a few weeks ago highlighted exactly why the Reds must do all they can to tie him down to a new deal, with the German star excellent at breaking play up in the midfield as well as getting into positions to launch attacks, combining brilliance off the ball with composure on it – arguably, Liverpool do not have another midfielder like that.

Two years ago, there wouldn’t be many Liverpool fans who would be disappointed at the prospect of losing Can on a free transfer, but the last 24 months have seen the midfielder improve dramatically under Klopp. And at the age of 24, much more improvement is sure to come.

And with Klopp seemingly able to get the best out of the Germany international, Liverpool will be hoping that his potential is fulfilled at Anfield.

And with the window now shut, the Reds can focus all their efforts on attempting to secure the midfielder’s services beyond the summer, as failure to do so would significantly weaken this Liverpool team ahead of the 2018/19 season.
