With Zaha injured, Crystal Palace must now seek to land this £9m-rated free agent

Crystal Palace supporters have been relatively satisfied in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side come from behind to earn a point at home to fellow Premier League strugglers Newcastle United on Sunday.

Roy Hodgson’s men went into their clash with the Magpies having drawn 1-1 away at West Ham in midweek, thus steadying the ship somewhat following their 4-1 hammering at the hands of Arsenal ten days earlier. And the Eagles moved another point closer to safety on Sunday as, although Mo Diame gave the visitors a first half lead, Luka Milivojevic’s penalty ten minutes after the break clinched a deserved point for Hodgson’s side, a result which moved them back up to 14th place after Southampton had gone above them courtesy of their win on Saturday.

Consequently, there have been many satisfied Palace fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are growing increasingly confident that their side can indeed avoid relegation this term, which would be some effort given they lost each of their opening eight matches of the season.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Eagles supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that influential ace Wilfried Zaha looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury at the weekend.

And given how brilliant the Ivory Coast international has been for the club this term, they are seriously going to miss him, which is why they must try and compensate for his absence by launching a move for free agent Samir Nasri.

The £9 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) terminated his contract at Turkish side Antalyaspor at the end of January and as such will be on the lookout for his next club, and Palace should subsequently seek to land the 30-year-old for the remainder of the season.

Ultimately, the former France international has pedigree at Premier League level following spells at both Arsenal and Manchester City, scoring 36 goals and laying on 42 assists in 215 top-flight appearances, equating to a direct contribution every 197 minutes.

And while those aren’t ground-breaking numbers, he would certainly add something more to the depleted Palace ranks following Zaha’s injury, as well as vast amounts of experience having played that many top level matches, as well as winning two Premier League titles.

And at 30 years of age, he’s hardly entering the twilight of his career – the Frenchman still has plenty to offer and, given his prior efforts in the Premier League, he could make a difference for the Eagles.

Yes, he is not at the same level as Zaha is at present, but with the window closed and the Ivorian facing a lengthy time out of the game, Palace may need to get what they can to bolster their survival chances. And there aren’t many more talented free agents out there than Nasri.

And that is why they must seek to get a deal done for free agent Nasri in the coming days and weeks.
