Wolves could make a fatal mistake by landing £22.5m-rated striker this summer

The Wolverhampton Wanderers fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the new season when they will play Premier League football for the first time since 2012.

Nuno Espirito Santo has led his side into the top-flight of English football in emphatic fashion this season after storming clear at the top of the Championship table, but despite this, he will be firmly aware that a huge task lies ahead. The club will need to invest in new talent if they wish to survive on their return to the Premier League next season and, according to reports from The Sun, they could be set to land a striker this summer.

The report claims that the Wanderers are interested in signing Andre Silva from AC Milan, despite the fact he has previously stated his desire to remain with the Rosssoneri for the foreseeable future. Although Silva’s past history with FC Porto suggests he possesses plenty of potential to become a prolific striker in European football, Wolves should abandon their pursuit of the Portuguese international due to his poor form since moving to Serie A.

Silva (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt) moved to Milan after notching 21 goals and providing 8 assists from 44 appearances in Porto colours, but he has failed to adapt to life in Italy following his big-money transfer. Silva will be keen to forget about this season as quickly as possible after scoring just 2 goals from 23 appearances in the Italian top-flight, although his record in Europe is markedly better with 6 goals from 10 Europa League appearances.

Naturally, Silva can be forgiven for his slow beginning to life at Milan, as it takes time to adapt to one of Europe’s top leagues following a transfer from Liga Nos where the standard is comparably lower. However, the fact he has failed miserably on his debut season in Italy strongly suggests that Wolves need to focus their interest on experienced Premier League talents this summer.

Silva is a player who Santo should certainly keep his eye on with a future transfer in mind, but after the season he has had, he should suggest other transfer targets to the club’s hierarchy this summer. How Wolves decide to spend their money during the transfer market will have a huge impact on where they will finish next season, so they must ensure they spend it wisely and avoid making an incredibly risky move to sign Silva from AC Milan.
