Despite seeing their team overturn a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 this afternoon, a number of Wolves fans were still livid with the performance of right-back Matt Doherty.
As noted by journalist Tim Spiers on Twitter (via @TimSpiers), the Republic of Ireland defender failed to execute his man-marking duties on Jan Bednarek as the Southampton defender headed his team in front at St Mary’s, while Alex Dicken of Birmingham Live felt that the 27-year-old “offered very little going forward too” – he recorded just one cross and that didn’t find a team-mate.
Doherty’s passing was worryingly sloppy against the Saints, giving the ball away with 19 of his 34 passes as he recorded a mediocre accuracy rate of 44.1%, the lowest of anyone who featured for Wolves today, while he was also culpable of poor ball control on two occasions. [via WhoScored]
The Irish right-back, who has started 18 Premier League games this season, came under fire from some Wolves fans recently after the defeat to Watford earlier this month and, as you can see below, today he was again the target of less than favourable reviews from a portion of the Molineux faithful:
