The Wolverhampton Wanderers fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to seeing a handful of new players arrive at the club ahead of their Premier League campaign.
Nuno Espirito Santo will be feeling optimistic about his side’s chances of holding their own in the top-flight next season, but without the addition of both quality and experience they will certainly struggle to beat the drop. The Wanderers will need to strengthen in a variety of positions whilst maintaining a shrewd approach in the transfer market to ensure they use their money wisely.
With that in mind, the Wolves hierarchy should turn their attention towards free agents this summer and sign a player who possesses both quality and experience in abundance, namely Stephan Lichsteiner. The 34-year-old right-sided player was recently released by Juventus after 7 years at the club in which he clinched the Serie A title in all 7 seasons he spent with the Old Lady.
Santo’s preference to operate with wing-backs make Lichsteiner an ideal proposition this summer, as he is more than comfortable operating in both advanced and defensive positions on the right-wing. Although he has never been blessed with fantastic pace, Lichsteiner is a defensively assured player with the technical quality to provide dangerous crosses and through balls in the final-third, so he would undoubtedly add a significant layer of quality to Wolves’ play at both ends of the field next season.
The London Evening Standard believe that the Switzerland international has held talks with Arsenal over a proposed move to the Emirates Stadium this summer, but his personal assessment of the situation suggests he would be open to rival offers at this stage in negotiations. Wolves should take encouragement from his admission and make an eleventh hour offer to tempt him to embark on a new challenge at Molineux where he is likely to enjoy plenty of first-team opportunities next season.
The presence of an experienced individual within the dressing room undoubtedly represents a huge bonus for any club attempting to establish themselves in the top-flight. Lichsteiner’s arrival would provide Wolves with a level of experience which is difficult to come by and, considering he is available on a free transfer, Santo would be foolish to miss out on a potential bargain acquisition this summer.
