Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided a big update regarding Wolves‘ interest in bringing Diego Costa to Molineux.
Costa to Wolves?
The 32-year-old recently had his contract terminated in the Spanish capital on the request of the player himself and was let go from his deal six months early (via The Guardian).
As a result, Costa is now a free agent and is free to negotiate a contract with any club he likes. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are reportedly one of the teams interested in his services.
Speaking with Give Me Sport, Romano was asked about whether any Premier League clubs, including Wolves, were interested in Costa’s services this month.
“To be honest, the only club who made an official bid to Diego Costa in these 10 days has been Al Hilal in Arabic football,” he said.
“So the only bid he received is this one. From the Premier League? He’s hoping. Diego is taking his time, he’s taking his time with his family. He wants to decide about his future, (about) accepting this kind of solution or going for another one, but for sure, the only bid received is this one.
“So if something will appear from the Premier League, I know that he would be happy to be back in the Premier League with a good opportunity. But about Wolves, I have nothing confirmed.”
He continued: “If something will arrive, Diego will be happy to be back in the Premier League. If not, pay attention to this kind of solution like Chinese or Arabic clubs like Al Hilal.”
Transfer Tavern Verdict
It would be a show-stopping signing if Wolves could pull this one off, and especially crucial considering who he would be replacing – the injured Raul Jimenez was key to everything Wolves have done so well in the last couple of seasons.
Despite this, Costa, who scored 58 goals for Chelsea and won two Premier League titles with them, was on a salary of £265k-per-week, which is over 150% more than the top Molineux earner is taking home in the form of Joao Moutinho (Spotrac).
This could be why Al Hilal have made the move for him and he could be swayed due to financial reasons, but Romano’s big update has at least left the door open for a possible Wolves swoop.
