The Wolves fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling confident ahead of their Premier League campaign after emphatically storming to promotion this season.
Nuno Espirito Santo will be looking to delve into the transfer market in the coming months to secure the signing of a handful of players who can help his side establish themselves in the top-flight. Although it may appear like a slightly counter-productive strategy, Santo should consider looking at the clubs who were recently relegated from the Premier League, as there are plenty of players who will be actively seeking transfers away from their respective clubs.
With that in mind, Wolves should add West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans (valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt) to their shortlist this summer, as his experience at the top level could prove to be a valuable asset in their bid for survival. The Northern Ireland international was a regular starter for the Baggies throughout their uninspiring season and he was one of their standout performers whilst captaining the club.
West Brom’s relegation arrived as a consequence of their toothless edge in the final-third and their inability to create opportunities rather than due to defensive frailties, so Santo should not be deterred from making a bid for Evans on that basis alone. Evans has won the Premier League on 3 separate occasions and also has a Champions League medal to his name, so it’s clear that he should be playing his football at a higher level than the Championship.
At 30-years-old Evans still has plenty of footballing years ahead of him, and he should be available at a discounted price after suffering relegation this season. With rich footballing experience, defensive intelligence and leadership qualities to bring to the table, there’s no reason why Wolves should have any qualms about raiding their local-rivals for one of their prize assets this summer.
And considering Wolves typically operated with three centre-backs throughout their promotion-clinching campaign, it’s fair to say they will need strength their depth in this position throughout the summer, so Evans should be a number one target for the Wanderers when the window reopens for business on Thursday.
