Wolves should take huge gamble on £10.8m-rated PL full-back in light of recent reports

The Wolves fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the summer transfer window following their promotion to the Premier League.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will deservedly finish their campaign as champions of the Championship following a wonderful season for the club. The Wanderers faithful propping up our bar have been in buoyant mood for the entirety of the season due to their side’s form in the second-tier of English football, but they are firmly aware of the challenge which lies ahead.

Wolves will need to secure a handful of signings this summer in order to secure their status in the Premier League next season despite the clear quality which already resides within the squad. It’s likely that Santo is already in the process of drawing up a shortlist of candidates who could potentially arrive at the club, and one man who should certainly be on that list is Matteo Darmian of Manchester United (valued at £10.8 million by Transfermarkt).

According to recent reports in The Times, Jose Mourinho is willing to listen to offers for the Italian full-back this summer, and if that proves to be the case then Wolves would be foolish not to make a bid. The quality of Darmian’s performances seem to have been on a downward trajectory since he made an extremely promising debut at Old Trafford in August 2015, but he has shown promise throughout his time in Manchester, albeit in sporadic bursts.

Darmian has undoubtedly lacked consistency in his performances, but that can be explained by the fact he has struggled for a run of games in the first-team amidst competition from Antonio Valencia. At Molineux, the 28-year-old right-back would have a fantastic opportunity to cement his place in the first-team due to a decrease in the intensity of competition for places.

The fact that Santo prefers to utilise a 3-4-3 system which relies on wing-backs rather than orthodox full-backs suits Darmian’s playing style and preference to move forward when possible, so he should have no problem adapting to his new surroundings at Wolves. It would undoubtedly represent a huge risk to sign Darmian given his sub-standard form for United this season, but he should be excused for those performances and given a lifeline by the newly-promoted side who have a fantastic opportunity to grab themselves a bargain signing.
