Wolves: Steve Madeley reacts to Scott Sellars heckling -Premier League

The Athletic reporter Steve Madeley has come to the defence of Wolves technical director Scott Sellars after the 56-year-old copped stick from some of the home support at Molineux after the 4-0 defeat at home to Leicester City on Sunday.

THE LOWDOWN: UNFAIR STICK

When the referee blew for full-time against the Foxes, Sellars was ushered away into the directors’ box amid some supporters hurling abuse at the 56-year-old, who was told to “get out of our club”.

The disastrous result saw Wolves plummet to second from bottom in the Premier League, kept off the foot of the table only on goal difference, while they remain the division’s lowest scorers with a mere five goals from 12 games.

Madeley pointed out in an article for The Athletic that, while Madeley is the technical director at Molineux, he does not have the final say over transfer decisions.

Instead, he is effectively a ‘line manager’ at Wolves, coordinating the work of personnel such as analysts, sport scientists, scouts, coaches and academy staff, rather than making key decisions as to player recruitment.

THE LATEST: MADELEY DEFENDS SELLARS

Taking to Twitter to share his latest piece from The Athletic, Madeley came to the defence of Sellars, who endured a torrid time on Sunday and had to be protected by a circle of stewards.

The reporter argued that Fosun chairman Jeff Shi is the man who signs off on player recruitment, with Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes proposing a series of summer signings.

Madeley tweeted: “Scott Sellars getting stick is inevitable. It comes with the job title. But it’s absurd that he was the only one targeted when this is Fosun’s mess.”

THE VERDICT: NOT JUST SELLARS TO BLAME

Ultimately, the stick towards Sellars as an individual is unfair, given the lack of context regarding his role before the defence issued by Madeley.

On the other hand, though, you cannot argue against the frustrations of Wolves fans, who endured a dismal end to last season and an even worse beginning to the current campaign, with three weeks having now passed without a full-time replacement for Bruno Lage being appointed.

Also, it is hardly Sellars’ fault that summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic succumbed to a horrendous injury on his debut for the club, nor that Raul Jimenez continues to be afflicted by fitness issues.

The problems on and off the pitch at Molineux are a culmination of misjudgments by players, management and boardroom executives, so it’s not right that one man should be subjected to the vitriol aired in his direction yesterday.
