This article forms part of our Valuation Evaluation feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at the increase or decrease of a player’s Transfermarkt valuation and whether it is justified or not.
At present, Wolves’ Matt Doherty is no doubt one of the most influential defenders in the country.
In that right wing-back position, particularly going forward, the 28-year-old has impressed this season. Furthermore, it is no surprise that his market valuation on Transfermarkt has gone up from £2.25m (August 2018) to £18m.
It is a fair increase. In fact, some may even argue that Doherty is worth much more than that. And looking at his Premier League statistics from the current campaign, it is not a far-fetched thing to suggest.
As already mentioned, offensively, he has been dangerous. He scored in Wolves’ last outing against Tottenham, making it four goals for the league campaign, and continues to be one of the more shot-happy players in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad despite being a defender.
How much is Matt Doherty worth?
£18m or more
Less than £18m
Averaging 1.2 shots per game, only Adama Traore, Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez are firing at goal more often in matches (via WhoScored), showing the sort of attacking impetus that the Republic of Ireland international has added to the side.
Last season, Doherty came in for praise on BBC’s Match of the Day from Jermaine Jenas, who highlighted the player’s threat following an impressive display against Burnley. “The crosses he put into the box were brilliant. But what impressed me more were the runs he made, they’re intelligent runs,” Jenas said (via SportsJOE).
So for his attacking ability alone, Doherty’s valuation increase is warranted as he continues to excel in English football’s top flight.
