Wolves: Fans think back on the club’s progress after Europa League win in Italy

Wolves are on the brink of qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League after last night’s 3-2 win away to Torino in the first leg of the play-off round.

If Nuno Espirito Santo’s team avoid defeat to the Serie A side at Molineux next week, they will enter the group stage of the competition just six seasons after playing in the third tier of English football.

Tim Spiers (@tim_spiers_Star), who covers the club for the Express & Star, took to Twitter last night to express his astonishment at the progression Wolves have made in recent years.

In 2013, Wolves were relegated to League One under the watch of Dean Saunders and their second successive demotion prompted then-owner Steve Morgan to say that the club had “failed our supporters and the city“.

The takeover by the club by Fosun International three years ago brought about significant investment that led to Nuno coming in as manager in 2017 and Wolves being promoted as emphatic winners of the Championship a year later.

In their first campaign back in the Premier League, they finished seventh, a position that was ultimately good enough to secure European football after champions Manchester City won both domestic cups.

These Wolves fans on Twitter gleefully compared where the club are now compared to darker days in the past:
