Our Manchester United fans here inside the Transfer Tavern are excited about the summer transfer window and a possible next wave of youth academy prospects coming through the ranks, with Jose Mourinho not looking to break United’s 80-year-old record of having a youth academy player named in every matchday squad.
Following his appointment, many of our punters believed that Mourinho wouldn’t give youth a chance at Old Trafford, however, he seems to be fully invested in the Red Devils’ long-standing policy – Scott McTominay is a prime example of that.
Despite being invested in the youth setup at Old Trafford, the Portuguese man needs some domestic success next season in the league after a second-place finish last year and, may turn to type by bringing in players for big money. Even though many have deemed it the Red Devils’ best season in the post-Fergie era, a lot of the punters in the bar still feel there’s some huge improvements to be made in order to close the gap to rivals Man City.
The bar staff will be urging Ed Woodward to make Mourinho look back in history and the infamous footsteps of the class of ’92 and more recently Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard, by believing and trusting in the youngsters.
Our landlord takes a look at the TWO players that could be United’s next success story, given the chance…
OUR VERDICT – Angel Gomes and Andreas Pereira
Despite being out on loan at La Liga side Valencia last season, there was the growing talk of a return to United in January. Pereira is considered a huge talent for the future within the walls of Old Trafford and many believe it’s time he started to gain some valuable first-team minutes in the Premier League.
A very creative talent, he should fully look the part in a United shirt and seems to be a player the fans would love to watch from the Stretford End. Now, it’s time for Mourinho to let the attacker have the platform he needs in which to grow into the player many believe he can be.
Angel Gomes has recently penned a long-term deal with the club, Mourinho would be wise to give Gomes some Premier League starts next season. One of the most talented young forwards to have emerged from the club’s academy in recent years, handing him a few starts could do wonders for his confidence and aid him grow as a first-team player.
The local Mancs love a youth player coming into the fold, and none come more exciting than Gomes.
