Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern have endured a tough few days as they prepare for a final day showdown in the Premier League, with qualification for next season’s Champions League now out of their hands.
Defeat to West Ham United on Tuesday meant the Red Devils must rely on Swansea getting something against Manchester City this weekend, if they are to leapfrog their arch-rivals to fourth place spot.
Many in the bar have already given up on this goal and are instead discussing news of a high-profile transfer at Old Trafford, with The Daily Star reporting Raphael Varane will only move to the club if Jose Mourinho is appointed manager.
Mourinho has been rated as the favourite to succeed Louis Van Gaal at Old Trafford ever since his axing from Chelsea in mid-December but now, five months down the line, we’re still awaiting news as to whether he will be handed the job.
As a controversial character, Mourinho’s arrival would lead to wholesale changes within the squad but news that Varane is keen to work with his former boss, who led the French defender during his stint at Real Madrid, will soften the blows of any other departures.
Should Man United appoint Mourinho and sign Varane? Let us know in the comments below!
