World Cup winner coy on future amid old links with Newcastle United

Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern will be overjoyed if they can make their latest rumoured transfer target a Magpie during the summer and will be hoping their manager can help to convince him.

The Toon Army made a huge step in their efforts to stay in the Premier League next season with a 2-1 victory against Arsenal and the locals will be looking ahead to seeing who they can bring in to St. James’ Park.

The punters will be hoping they can keep Rafa Benitez at the helm, whilst also hoping the club can back him financially to get them the players they need to bring into the side and help them to strengthen. One man that locals will want to join them in the future will be Fernando Torres, who according to the Chronicle Live has not ruled out a move.

The Spaniard is set to leave Atletico Madrid in the summer as his contract expires and it is thought he could have a number of destinations to choose from, with many in the north-east hoping he can reunite with Benitez. He’s previously been linked with a move to the Magpies – as per the Mirror via the Liverpool Echo – and has an obvious history with Benitez.

“I have not made the decision. I will say it as I have said: that I leave Atletico,” he told Spanish radio station Cadena SER as Chronicle Live report.

“I will not continue in Spain. Europe? I don’t know. One has an idea that can then change.”

Landlord’s Verdict

The Newcastle fans in the Tavern will be hoping Benitez can use his previous relationship with the striker to his advantage and bring the 34-year-old to St. James’ Park this summer. The former Liverpool man has a proven record in the Premier League, despite his torrid time at Chelsea.
