Arsenal fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are gutted to miss out on one of their top targets after the London Evening Standard revealed that Benedikt Howedes is set to stay at Schalke.
The German international has a buy-out clause in his contract and his future has been in doubt recently after the Bundesliga club revealed that two foreign sides had tabled an offer for their defender.
Arsene Wenger will have hoped that his current group of German stars will have helped to attract Howedes to the Emirates.
But now the French tactician will have to look elsewhere after Howedes confirmed that he rejected a move abroad.
“Milan and Arsenal have really been keen on my services, this is what I am able to confirm,” the World Cup winner told kicker-Sportmagazin.
“Still I have not opted against them, I have decided in favour of Schalke. My job is not done here yet.
“And, especially after last season, I told myself I do not want to leave this way. I am a key player of this club.”
Now that Wenger has missed out on this World Cup winner he will have to look for new targets play alongside either Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny.
But next on his job list is to get Petr Cech over the line as reports are beginning to flow through the Tavern, which are saying the deal is on the verge of being completed.
