Arsenal will be left wondering what might have been, after it was revealed a world star initially wanted to play for the north London giants.
Metro cite quotes from France Football which indicate David Alaba dreamt of playing for Arsenal as a young man, although he eventually ended up sealing a move to Bayern Munich, where he’s become a star.
With the Bavarian giants, 23-year-old Alaba has developed into one of the best young defenders in world football but the Austrian international favoured the Gunners initially, having idolised Patrick Vieire, and turned down Bayern Munich twice.
‘David was so good that Austria (Wien) couldn’t keep him. Heiko Vogel, Bayern’s U14 manager, spotted him during a tournament in Bremen. He was straight away seduced by his will and charisma on the pitch.’
‘He was the best in his team with (Christoph) Knasmullner. However, David will say no twice to Bayern Munich, a team he didn’t like. He preferred Arsenal, where his idol, Patrick Vieira, played.’
Alaba has won four Bundesliga titles and the Champions League already in his short career and has made no secret of his admiration for Arsenal in the past, although it’s extremely unlikely that transfer would ever go ahead now.
